The power of one

Have you noticed that in most action movies, there is usually just one hero? The other day I watched a movie, ‘Olympus has fallen’ and it reiterated how powerful just one person, courageously committed to a vision, can be.

So often in life we wish to do something positive, change a situation, but we are afraid to try because we are alone. We look around hoping someone will encourage us, we expect people to applaud us for going on a peaceful mission or for bringing about change, but often we see no one, we hear no applause.

It is understandable to throw in the towel, give up, and say “I tried”. But that is not enough. In this life, and especially as Christians, we cannot afford to give up and follow the status quo. We will have to do all that the Lord has laid on our hearts to do, whether we have company or not. If we have to be trailblazers, so be it. In the words of Winston Churchill, “Never, ever ever ever ever give up!”

  • So don’t be afraid if you are the first or only Christian in your family.
  • Don’t be worried if you are the first person to start something new among your friends.
  • Don’t be discouraged if you are the only one who is not interested in worldly wisdom but would rather follow ageless Biblical truths and admonitions.
  • Don’t be afraid to step out and start that campaign

Like the illumination of a light, you will show others the right way to do things. The reason there is so much darkness and wickedness in the world today is not that evil or darkness has increased per se, but that Christians have turned off their lights. Imagine what would happen if all Believers truly began to let their light shine?

There are people God wants to bless through you: your spouse, your children, your parents, brothers and sisters, friends, your colleagues, employees/employers, customers, the lost, the hurting, the deceived,  etc. You are important to God as a partner with all the people you know. Who knows, you just might be the hero that person or even your community needs.

Don’t worry about how it will all come together. If you are doing this to honour God, not yourself, HE will show up at the right times. But you must take that step of faith first, and keep walking. Remember all the many people in the Bible and in history who dared to do something different. Initially they were alone, some were even rejected, but because they stayed faithful, they gradually influenced others.

And so I encourage you, don’t let fear keep you back from being all God wants you to be. God commands us to “fear not” 365 times in the Bible, one for each day! Fear is not of God, in fact it is a sin. In Revelations 21:8 we read, But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death”

In this crazy world we live in today, will you be willing to be all that God wants you to be or will you choose to be cowardly ? God is waiting.
